Silvicultural Practices in Forests of the Southern United States: Insect and Disease Considerations’
نویسندگان
چکیده
The relationship between silvicultural practices, e.g. thinning, and pest organisms (insects and diseases) has been investigated extensively in pine species but to a lesser degree in hardwoods. Of critical interest is the potential negative impact to the residual stand resulting from insect damage and diseases that develop as a consequence of silvicultural practices. This is especially true with the increasing economic opportunities in southern forests. Our intent is to report the positive and negative impacts of silvicultural practices for hardwoods in the southern United States that relate to insects and diseases. Emphasis will be placed on stand modification practices. The impact of these practices on current or potential pest problems will be discussed with respect to current and past research concerning insects and disease. Management approaches will be suggested that will help minimize loses from insects and diseases.

Impacts and management implications of ice storms on forests in the southern United States
This review explores the ecological and silvicultural impacts of ice storms on forests in the southern United States. Different environmental factors like weather conditions, topography, vegetation, stand density, and management practices influence the degree of glaze damage a particular forest may experience. Additionally, the frequent contradictions in the relationships between these factors ...
متن کاملSilvicultural Considerations in Managing Southern Pine Stands in the Context of Southern Pine Beetle
Roughly 30 percent of the 200 million acres of forest land in the South supports stands dominated by southern pines. These are among the most productive forests in the nation. Adapted to disturbance, southern pines are relatively easy to manage with even-aged methods such as clearcutting and planting, or the seed tree and shelterwood methods with natural regeneration. In addition, most species ...
متن کاملSilviculture of Southern Bottomland Hardwoods: 25 Years of Change
This paper describes changes that have occurred in the silviculture of southern bottomland hardwood forests over the past 25 years, particularly in terms of modifications to existing silvicultural practices, abandonment of unsuitable practices, and development of new practices. Changes in the focus and objectives of hardwood silviculture and the emergence of new concerns to hardwood silvicultur...
متن کاملThe Silviculture of Restoration: A Historical Perspective With Contemporary Application
In the southern United States, the turn of the 20th century saw the high-grading of virgin pine stands that left millions of acres of forestland in desperate condition. Some of these southern pine stands now support thriving forests whose patterns and processes resemble those extant before they were cut a century ago, but others do not. The success of this recovery in the southern pinery was ba...
متن کاملInfluences of Management of Southern Forests on Water Quantity and Quality
Water is a key output of southern forests and is critical to other processes, functions, and values of forest ecosystems. This chapter synthesizes published literature about the effects of forest management practices on water quantity and water quality across the Southern United States region. We evaluate the influences of forest management at different temporal and spatial scales, and we recog...
